Work Opportunities in the USA for International Students

Working while studying in the United States is another great way to reduce the cost of education and living expenses while gaining relevant work experience. International students can find work in the United States. These jobs are classified as follows:

Jobs on Campus
These job types are typically available to international students in their first year of study with an F1 visa. These are positions on campus or in affiliated organizations located outside of campus.

On-campus jobs are related to the curriculum of the school and may provide direct service to students. Mailroom attendant, teaching assistant in college, barista, student library assistant, and campus ambassador are all examples of on-campus jobs.

Off-Campus Employment
Off-campus jobs are available to international students who have completed their first academic year. Students experiencing economic hardship, such as the loss of an on-campus job due to circumstances beyond the student’s control, the loss of financial aid, a significant increase in tuition or the cost of living, can also apply.

Cashier, retail sales associate, bank teller, driver, and social media assistant are examples of off-campus jobs.

Practical Experience in the Classroom (CPT)
CPT jobs are short-term permits that allow students to gain real-world experience in their field of study at US universities. Students can work full-time at CPT jobs without being restricted by work-hour restrictions.

Internships, summer internships, or co-ops could be paid or unpaid jobs for curricular practical training.

Optional Practical Experience (OPT)
OPT positions are also related to your field of study. Students who qualify for optional practical training can work 20 hours per week for up to 12 months. There are two types of OPT: pre-completion OPT and post-completion OPT.

Pre-completion OPT is available to students who have completed one academic year in the United States and whose programs are still in progress. They can work full-time during the holidays and 20 hours per week during the school year.
When students finish their studies, they are eligible for post-completion OPT. They have the option of working full-time or 20 hours per week. OPT jobs are available to STEM students for a period of 24 months.

During study breaks and on a part-time basis, international students in the United States can work and earn up to $30,000 per year. Students will also gain work experience and meet new people while putting money in their pockets.
